Top Five | Hello Summer?

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

So far summer has been a washout, we’re hoping it improves but so far it is showing no signs. But still we are managing to enjoy ourself with a busy weekend catching up with friends.  Let’s take a look at the this week’s top five:

One

Top 100716 | Cherry Bakewell

It is no secret that Calum likes baking! This week he tried his hand at a home made Bakewell tart, following a recipe we found in Country Living magazine. It was really quite simple, and tasted miles better than a shop bought tart.

Two

Top five | Sweet Peas

We have had a couple of failures in the cut flower garden, the rudbeckia didn’t germinate, and Rich’s mum accidentally dug up the Bells of Ireland seedlings. However on the positive we have a good stream of sweat peas that we can have around the house, they look great with a couple of stems of lady’s mantle.

Three

Top Five | Country Living

For slightly convoluted reasons we are both a little bit obsessed with American interior design. We love it when we find HGTV shows on British TV, and whenever we are in the states we have to traipse around all the interior shops to get inspiration and pick up catalogues. Between visits statesside we have to make do with American magazines, our current favourite is Country Living.

Four

Top Five | TKMaxx

The home section of TK Maxx is one of our favourite shops, we get lots of cool things from there at really great prices. What is even better is when you go for a quick browse and find a couple of cool things that have been further reduced. We found the above urn and plant pot that work great in our bedroom and cost £10 in total (the picture frames were also for there too)!

Five

Top 100716 4

Last week was the annual RHS Hampton Court Flower Show.  It is held in the grounds of the palace and in our opinion it is the nicest of the RHS flowers shows. It has lovely show gardens, beautiful floral displays and a wide range of retail stalls Rich got lots of inspiration for our future garden, we just need to find a house now!

Top Five | Hello July

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

It’s July and it seems summer is already running away with us. Mind you the summer weather doesn’t seem to have arrived yet so we’ll hold out hope!

One

Top Five | BBQ

The weather of late has been, what could politely be described as ‘Changeable’ it is a bit tricky to plan anything as you never know if you are going to get caught in a downpour.  However Saturday night turned out to be very pleasant so we grabbed the opportunity to have an impromptu BBQ. Calum cooked (as per usual) and we raided the supplies to set a nice table. If a job is worth doing well and all that!

Two

Top Five | Cookie Cake

As a bit of an indulgent treat we created a cookie cake for Saturday’s pudding.  It is a very simple but massively impressive desert. It is just a pile of cookies sandwiched with cream, mascarpone and some sugar. It was ridiculously unhealthy but ever so lovely!

Three

Top Five | Picnic

We have got into the habit of taking a picnic out with us when we go on our adventures. There is something wonderful about siting in the english countryside to eat our lunch, taking a moment to enjoy our surrounding and to recharge. I feel we could all benefit from more picnics in life!

Four

Top 0307163

This weekend’s adventures took us to a couple of inspirational gardens, including Nymans in West Sussex. The house burnt down in the 1940s but the garden remains as grand as ever. In our ongoing quest to visit as many National Trust Properties as possible we have now passed the 5% barrier!

Five

Top 0307164

We both love Bees, coincidently they we’re the emblems of both of our schools, and we plan of keeping bees when we have enough space to.  In the mean time Rich found this lovely print  by The Tasty Painter on Etsy, we love it!

Top Five | Midsummer

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

We have reached Midsummer and the year seems to be whizzing past too quickly! Lets have a look at this week’s top five:

One

Top five | International Giraffe Day

It was the International Giraffe Day on the 21st June. Interesting fact, the Swahili word for Giraffe is Twigga (pronounced Twee-ga), which Calum knows as he grew up calling them that! Giraffes are such graceful animals and to have a day that promotes and celebrates them is a great thing!

Two

Top Five | National Garden Scheme

Each year, Rich’s parents open their garden for the National Garden Scheme.  This charity donates all the proceeds from people opening their gardens for visitors to various charities. There are three houses in Horsell that open their gardens and the local allotments open to visitors as well.  Tea and Cake is also served for people to enjoy in the surrounds of the garden.  The week before is usually a hive of activity whilst Rich’s parents prepared the garden for the day.  Thankfully, we had a good day (no rain) and a good number of people came to visit.

Three

Top Five | Deck Chairs

As we are in-between our own property at the minute, we are trying not to buy anything that could change the type of property we buy.  However, we have been eyeing up some deck chairs in Sainsbury’s for a while and on Saturday bought a pair. We love the look of them and hope that the garden we get will do them justice.

Four

Top Five | Nordicana

As you might have noticed, we like a bit of Scandinavian style!  For Rich’s birthday, Calum bought a copy of the Nordicana Book.  It is a great book to start understanding the Nordic culture, history and traditions.

Five

Top Five | Midsommar

25th June was Midsommar in Sweden and we celebrated this as best we could (not being Swedish).  We will go more into this in a blog post later this week.  It is traditionally the start of the holiday period in Sweden and the Country effectively shuts to celebrate.  We invited our friends Ben and Lauren over to celebrate and enjoy some much needed fun and happiness.

Top Five | Return from our Holidays

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

We are back from France after having an amazing holiday in The Loire Valley. It is such a beautiful part of the world, we will share our adventures in some further posts but in the mean time lets look at this weeks top five!

One

Top Five | Cocktails

The reason we started our Cocktail of the Week feature was because we found ourselves with far too many bottles of obscure spirits lurking in the back of the cupboard.  We have started to make a dent in these supplies so we thought we should start to replenishes them.  We have brought home, Cointreau (an Orange flavoured liqueur), Crème de Cassis (Blackberry liqueur) and Crème de Violette (Violet liqueur). We are excited to see what cocktails we can make with these new ingredients!

Two

Top Five | Souvenirs

Finding souvenirs when we are on our travels is always a tricky endeavour. One one hand we always like to have a reminder of the places we visit but on the other hand most souvenirs are just not very good. That is why we were excited to find these Gien plates of a couple of the chateaux we visited. We have recently started collecting blue patented plates for an interior design idea we are working on.

Three

Top Five | Elizabeth David

Staying in self catering accommodation in a tiny village meant we stayed in most nights and enjoyed cooking with local ingredients  to make lovely traditional french dishes. To help with the recipes we packed a second hand copy of Elizabeth David’s French Provincial Cooking which despite being over 50 years old is still a fantastic resource. Needless to say we had some fantastic meals accompanied by some lovely wines.

Four

Top Five | Rosa 'Eden'

Whilst wandering around the grand gardens and the quite little towns of the Loire Valley we kept on noticing the same climbing rose again and again. These beautiful old-fashioned flowers are pink on the inside fading to a cream on the outside. Being suitably charmed by this flower we had to find it’s name, after a bit of searching (and a visit to a garden centre in Tours) we discovered it is Rosa ‘Pierre de Ronsard’ also known in the UK as the Rosa ‘Eden 88’.

Five

Top Five | Inspiration

Every time we come back from holiday we are full of ideas and inspiration. Whilst we were in France Rich was inspired but the gardens, Calum inspired by the food and drink and we were both inspired by the property and interiors. Seeing as Rich has a love of magazines he decided to bring back Campagne Décoration to keep the ideas flowing!

Top Five | En France

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

We are on our holidays! So this week we might be quieter than normal…. we might also just be posting lots of pictures of France! But first let’s take a look at last week’s top five!

One

 Top Five | France

By the time you read this we will be holidaying in The Loire Valley. We are staying near to Tours in a little village called Courleon in a cute holiday cottage. The plan is to visit as many chateaux as possible, eat as much cheese as possible and drink as much wine. We’ll let you know how we get on!

Two

Top Five | Concorde

France twice in one week? Well that is exactly what Calum has done, his work meant he had to go to the airbus factory in Toulouse.  This is a place that Rich’s grandfather use to visit regularly when he was a production manager on Concorde. As a reminder of Papa we have this awesome picture of Concorde on our wall, it was give to him as a retirement present, we inherited it on his passing.

Three

Top 130616 3

As a bit of a treat to ourselves we bought this gorgeous Peppermint Tea & Thyme scent. It is part of Wax Lyrical’s range made in partnership with Fired Earth.  It was actually a tough decision which one to choose as the whole range smells gorgeous but in the end the freshness of this scent won out.

Four

Top 130616 5

It has been busy around the cottage as Rich’s parents are frantically getting their garden really for it’s annual opening. They have been opening their garden for over 10 years as part of a village garden safari and also as part of the National Gardens Scheme. If you fancy coming along to either of these openings you’d be more than welcome!

Five

Top 130616 4

As well as Annie the cat and Hettie the dog, the cottage has some other residents. We have a dove cote in the garden with population of white fan tailed doves. The dove coot was a 25th wedding anniversary present from Rich’s Dad to his Mum. The Doves are highly entertaining creatures, watching them go about their live gives us all no end of pleasure, especially when the baby doves (know as squabs) arrive!

Top Five | June’s arrival

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

So June is here, and despite the cold weather during the week the weekend turned out rather pleasant.  Let’s see what is in this weeks top five:

One

Top Five | Peonies

June means it is Peony season! Peonies are probably both of our favourite flowers, so having a bunch around the place makes us very happy. And despite its short season it is probably also one of our favourite garden plants. There is something about their big blouse blooms that make us very happy!

Two

Top five | Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants

We went out house hunting on Saturday, as I am sure most of you know finding the perfect new home can be very stressful. Whilst we were out an about we popped into Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants near Whitchurch, Hampshire. What a great little nursery, full to the brim of lots of interesting and unusual varieties. Well worth a visit!

Three

Top five | GoPro

After pondering it for a while we finally bit the bullet and bought a GoPro. We have been thinking about getting one for a while and ahead of our holiday to France next week we thought now would be a great opportunity. So far it has mainly been used for a couple of selfies (see below) and many many pictures of the pets.

Four

Top five | Alice Holt

Sunday was glorious weather so we decided to go for a picnic with our good friends Ben & Lauren, and their son (and our godson) Dexter. We headed off to Alice Holt Forest and did their Gruffolo trail. It is great outdoors adventure for little people!

Five

Top Five | GoPro

It is our five year anniversary on 6th June. Doesn’t time fly? Back in 2011 we met for a beer in a central London pub and instantly hit it off. Rich had written a spoof job advert about what he was looking for in a boyfriend and had shared it via twitter, one of the ‘job requirements’ was to be over 6″1, Calum responded that at 6″6 he qualified. The rest, as they say, is history!

Top Five | Spring Bank Holiday

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

It was another Bank Holiday weekend so we decided to make the most of it by visiting Calum’s goddaughter up in Yorkshire. We’ll share our thoughts on the North Yorkshire Coast in another post but in the meantime lets look at our top five!

One

National Trust

Whilst we were away we managed to fit in four National Trust properties (and three English Heritage ones). As fans of history, architecture, gardens and countryside, membership of the National Trust is a must for us. We are on a mission to visit 10% of their properties before the year is out. We are currently at 4.5%!

Two

Gorse

There is an old saying “When Gorse is out of bloom, Kissing is out of fashion” we often remark on this when we are out and about.  Luckily for us romantics out there Gorse flowers prolifically so one of the three native species of Gorse is always in flower somewhere. Pucker up!

Three

Yorkshire Beer

Despite our Cocktail of the Week feature, we’re actually mostly beer drinkers. So whilst in Yorkshire we took the opportunity to sample some local brews, we opted for lighter or golden ales to go with a BBQ we were having.  All were very tasty and we can recommend any of them.

Four

Glass Bottles

Whilst wandering around Whitby we found a shop selling vintage glass bottles and we bought a couple for home. We wish we knew more about collecting vintage bottles. One of us will read up on it at some point but in the meantime we’ll just enjoy them as beautiful and interesting objects!

Five

Goodbye

This week we said goodbye to an old friend of ours after a very brave battle with cancer. She was an inspiration to us; accepting, kind, miscievious and lived her life to the full. We will miss her dearly but we will take her lead, we’ll make the most of life, and seek out adventures she’d be proud of!

Top Five | A busy weekend

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

We had a very busy weekend, time up in London and getting on with chores out at the cottage. Busy but happy, let’s see what this weeks top five includes:

One

Sutton House

On Saturday we were busy in London. Whilst we were on our travels we stopped to have a look round The National Trust’s property Sutton House. It is an interesting Tudor house with a long and varied history. Worth exploring if you ever find yourself in the area.

Two

West Elm Plates

When we were out and about on Saturday we popped into West Elm This one of our favourite shops and we always make a point of having a look round whenever we are in town. We picked up a couple of cool plates for a display using some new and vintage pieces we’re planning. We will share more on that at a later date.

Three

Annie the Cat

Although we are busy with the veg patch there is not much specific to report. We have planted most things out and everything seems to be coming along well. Like most gardeners we have an ongoing battle with slugs! Annie, the cat, has taken a fancy to sleeping on the straw we have put out to protect the strawberries. We’d get angry with her, but she is just so cute!

Four

Candle by the fire

Life can get pretty busy sometimes, this weekend seemed to be particularly actioned packed. So come Sunday night we put on some candles, snuggled up on the sofa and watched Countryfile followed by Star Wars. Sunday nights don’t come much better!

Five

Top 23053

Wild flowers are particularly lovely at this time of year. Cow Parsley (sometimes called Queen Anne’s Lace) is an absolute favourites of ours. It is brightening up the place no end.

Top Five | Birthday Week

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

It’s was Richard’s Birthday this week, any excuse for a some celebrations is good with us!  Let’s see what this week’s top five includes:

One

Top Five 16051

On Tuesday it was Richard’s 34th Birthday. Where does the time go to? To celebrate we went out for a meal at The Sun Inn, Chobham with Richard’s folks.  An excellent meal and really good value!

Two

Top Five 16052

Carrying on the celebration on Wednesday we both took the day off work and headed to Bristol Zoo. For the passed three years we have gone to a zoo as a birthday day out for Richard, so this year we carried on the tradition. It is a lovely little zoo, and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Three

Top Five 16055

It was also our good friend Lauren’s Birthday last week so on Saturday we had Lauren, Ben and our Godson Dexter round for a drinks and nibbles in the sunshine.  All very civilised!

Four

Top Five 16054

Looking for something to do on Sunday we decided to head to Winchester, it is not far from us but we had never visited so we thought it would be good to explore. It is a gorgeous, historic city with plenty of attractions and shopping to keep us entertained.  We also headed to Molly’s Den, a vintage and antiques warehouse on the edge of the city, just our sort of place!

Five

Top Five 16053

Whilst we’re staying at Richard’s folks we get the pleasure of living with Hettie, their one-eyed rescue dog. She is the most gentle and charming dog we’ve ever met. When Richard works from home she keeps him company!

Top Five | Summer’s on its way!

Posted in Top Five by
Top Five

Summer has come early this week, so time to enjoy the weather. This is our Top Five things over the last week:

One

Top Five | BBQ

BBQing! When the sun shines we do what every self respecting British person does and we fire up the BBQ! Calum is the chef in our household, and he is getting quite the expert on the old BBQ. Although don’t get him started on Gas vs Charcoal!

Two

Top Five | White Hart, Chobham

Richard along with his folks went the The White Hart, Chobham. Richard’s folks used to live over the road from this pub, and were great friends with the Landlords. That was about 25 years ago now, and the pub has been through various changes since. Most recently the pub has had a lovely refurbishment, and makes a great village pub!

Three

Top Five | Picnic Spot

Besides BBQing, the other great British summer tradition is a Picnic.  Whilst we were out and about on Sunday we found a lovely spot for a picnic lunch. Hopefully the 1st of many this summer!

Four

Top Five | Banana

Whilst we are busy  sorting out our veg patch there have been lots of trips to the garden centre for supplies. Lurking in the clearance section Richard found a ornamental banana plant that was just asking to be taken home an looked after. For a couple of quid it seemed like a wise investment!

Five

Top Five | Annie Cat

In our temporary abode we are sharing with a couple of pets. This is Annie, a characterful cat that is adding a little joy into our lives.  She also likes boxes.
